Why Our Risk Radar Might Be Blinded— and How to Sharpen It

We all believe we can spot danger before it strikes—until we realize that our methods for judging risk are often flawed. Let’s fix that.


What Is Risk?

In professional fields, risk is typically defined as likelihood × impact—a helpful formula for estimating how probable an event is and how severe its consequences might be. Why We Often Get It Wrong

Even with a clear formula, risk assessment often fails—mainly because we miss these five foundational factors:


1. Collective—but Not Crowded

Risk assessment thrives on collaboration. A small, knowledgeable group fosters diverse perspectives, surfaces blind spots, and diminishes the influence of personal biases. 2. History and Context—Always Together

Relying solely on past data is a trap. Just because there have been no burglaries in the neighborhood doesn’t mean there won’t be—especially if a new train station opens nearby. 3. Define What—or Who—you’re Assessing

Assessing city‑wide “earthquake risk” is vague. The impact on a suburban, low‑rise school is far different than on a downtown high‑rise. Nor is likelihood uniform—maybe one area has historic seismic reinforcement while another doesn’t. 4. Time Frame—Your Risk’s Lens

Without clarity on the timeline, your likelihood scores become meaningless. A 100‑year outlook may deem war or conflict almost inevitable. 5. Be Specific, Not Vague

Generic categories like “economic downturn” or “infrastructure failure” lack precision. Instead, define a risk like “localized flooding near our warehouse due to a 50‑year storm in the next 48 hours.” The clearer and narrower the risk, the easier it is to estimate likelihood, measure impact, and prepare meaningful responses. Specificity transforms abstract fears into operational insights.


Bonus: Watch Out for Hidden Biases

Risk workshops aren’t infallible—they can suffer from systemic biases:

  • Survivorship bias: Celebrating successes only (the luckiest aircraft that return from battles) may mask unseen failures. ScienceDirect

  • Hindsight bias: After a crisis, we often believe it was inevitable (“I knew it all along”), which can skew how we evaluate future threats.

  • Algorithmic and cultural biases: Risk tools based on historical data may silently replicate systemic prejudices—particularly in areas like criminal justice.


Combat these by including diverse viewpoints, questioning assumptions, and critically evaluating past data—especially when uncertainty or injustice may skew results.

Real-World Example to Illustrate


Imagine you want to assess the threat of a distracted-drone accident near your facility:

  • Team: You gather 3–4 local security managers and a drone-operations expert.

  • History + Context: Past data shows no drone-related incidents—but a new delivery company leases nearby rooftops for drone landings.

  • Subject: A specific zone—your 10-story office building, adjacent parking lot.

  • Time Frame: Within the next 48 hours.

  • Risk: A drone strikes your rooftop heater, causing fire risk to people below.

  • Bias Watch: You question whether past “no incident” data includes all near-misses or just reported collisions.


This detailed framing lets you estimate not just theoretical danger, but decide on measures like adding drone-detection sensors or temporary roof bans during peak windows—actions

that vague “drone risk” assessments couldn’t support.


The Bottom Line

Risk assessment isn’t just math—it’s an art shaped by who’s at the table, what lens you use, and how clearly you define the scenario. When you:

  1. Engage a compact, informed team

  2. Blend past data with emerging context

  3. Pinpoint exactly what’s at stake

  4. Set a clear timeframe

  5. Zero in on precise risks

  6. Guard against biases

…you don’t just calculate risk. You make risk manageable, predictable, and—most importantly—actionable.
